Thunder Mountain is an 11441abbr=offNaNabbr=off summit in Carbon County, Montana, United States.
Thunder Mountain is located 17miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana, in the Beartooth Mountains which are a subrange of the Rocky Mountains.[1] It is set within the Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness on land managed by Custer-Gallatin National Forest.[2] The mountain ranks as the 52nd-highest peak in Montana.[2] Precipitation runoff from the mountain's slopes drains into Lake Fork → Rock Creek → Clarks Fork Yellowstone River → Yellowstone River. Topographic relief is significant as the summit rises 2600abbr=offNaNabbr=off above Lake Fork in 0.75miles. The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the United States Board on Geographic Names.[3]
Based on the Köppen climate classification, Thunder Mountain is located in a subarctic climate zone characterized by long, usually very cold winters, and mild summers.[4] Winter temperatures can drop below 0 °F with wind chill factors below −10 °F.
