Suran (ar|صوران|Ṣūrān) is a Syrian city administratively belonging to the Hama Governorate. In the 2004 census, Suran had a population of 29,100. Its inhabitants are predominantly Sunni Muslims.[1] Along with the inhabitants of nearby Kafr Zita, the inhabitants of Suran are descendants of the Mawali tribe.[2] The Mawali dominated the desert regions of northern Syria for centuries before being forced out to the vicinity of Hama and Aleppo in the 18th century by the Annizah, a Bedouin tribal confederation from Najd (central Arabia).[3]
In 2024, as part of the Syrian opposition offensive and Syrian Army retreat, the town was occupied by Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). On 2 December 2024, heavy fighting occurred in the area.[4] On 3 December, HTS regained control over the city.[5]
