The first female head of a federal subject in the Russian Federation was Valentina Bronevich, who was of Koryak Autonomous Okrug from 1996 to 2000.
Of the 89 current heads of federal subjects, one is a woman. This is Maria Kostyuk, acting Governor of Jewish Autonomous Oblast since November 5, 2024.
