An abbreviation of the Hebrew name Hebrew: אֶלְעָזָר Hebrew: [[Eleazar]] or אֱלִיעֶזֶר Hebrew: [[Eliezer]] meaning 'God has helped'[1] which first appeared in Jewish Aramaic (see Lazarus and Eleazar ben Shammua.) As a forename, it is more common in Slavic countries.[2] As a surname, however, it is more common in Hungary and Romania.[3]
