Joel Lobenthal (born September 15, 1959) is an American historian, author, and cultural critic who grew up in New York City. He is best known for his historical and cultural commentary on ballet, fashion, and art.[1]

Lobenthal is the son of Joseph Spiro Lobenthal Jr., a New York lawyer, and Shirley W. Lobenthal, a cytotechnologist who worked at the New York University-Bellevue Medical Center.[2] Lobenthal attended City-As-School High School along with artist Al Diaz, sociology professor Danny Kessler, and Neo-expressionist Jean-Michel Basquiat.[3]

Lobenthal is a featured contributor to Graydon Carter's Air Mail (magazine)[4] and was previously an associate editor of the quarterly Ballet Review and chief dance critic for the New York Sun.[5]
