"Eating the Cats ft. Donald Trump (Debate Remix)" is a parody song by the Kiffness, also known as David Scott, a South African born musician.[1] [2] The song samples Donald Trump's claim, during the United States presidential debate on 10 September 2024, that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating residents' pets.[3] The song intends to poke fun at the president's claims with a refrain "people of Springfield, don't eat my cat".[4]
Referring to the reasons behind the song, the Kiffness states that "music has a way of taking away negative energy and polarising feelings, especially with someone like Donald Trump".[5] He said there is a "vested interest" in American politics because of its impact on his home country, South Africa.[6]
The song has been streamed and watched over 9 million times on YouTube and has been viewed more than 1 million times on X (formerly known as Twitter) within 24 hours of its posting.[7] [8] Scott pledges to donate all proceeds to the Clark County SPCA Springfield, Ohio with over $20,000 raised already.[9] On September 18, the Kiffness performed "Eating the Cats" live in Munich, cementing the popularity of the song, and has continued to perform the song at several concerts.[10]
The lyrics of the song begin with Trump saying "they are eating the dogs, they are eating the cats, they are eating the pets of the people that live there". The singer then chimes in with the verse calling out "people of Springfield" and commenting, "why would you do that?" and "eat something else", offering bread, carrots and eggs as alternatives.[11]
