Castle is the name given to the ward[3] and suburb[4] of Hinckley in the Hinckley & Bosworth district in the county of Leicestershire, England. It is one of the six wards on Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council of the town.[5]
Geography
The ward covers the central part of Hinckley and encompasses roads such as Coventry Road, Regent Street, and Waterloo Road.[6]
Landmarks and places of interest
Notable areas of interest in the ward include:
- Hinckley Castle - Hinckley Castle was originally a motte and bailey[7] which escaped initial demolition of in 1173 unlike many other castles at the time.[8] However, the castle would eventually be demolished after being set on fire in 1172.[9] The castle was originally a simple timber built.[10] It is unknown when it was eventually demolished but its earthworks were later unearthed and are now part of a park with the war memorial.[11]
- St Mary's Church - St Mary's Church is the main parish church in the town.[12] It was built in 13th Century and was restored in 1875.[13] [14] It is a Grade I listed building and an active place of worship and community hub for the town and surrounding suburbs. It is also notable for its 184 feet/56m high spire.[15]
- Market Place - Market Place is one of the many older streets and centres of Hinckley originally held markets since the town's charter as a market town.[16] It continues to serve as one of the many retail districts of the town.
- Castle Street - Castle Street is another of the oldest streets in Hinckley, taking its name from the former castle and first recorded as a main thoroughfare for the town and surrounding settlements at the time.[17]
- The Crescent Shopping Centre - The Crescent Shopping Centre was built on a street called Brunel Street[18] and was a busy commercial district for the town until the entire area was demolished and later occupied by the purpose-built "Crescent Shopping Centre.[19]
