Club Deportivo Extremadura, formerly known as CD Extremadura 1924 and known as simply Extremadura, is a Spanish professional football club from the city of Almendralejo, in the autonomous community of Extremadura. They play in, the sixth division of football in Spain for football clubs in the region of Extremadura, holding home games at the Estadio Francisco de la Hera.
The club was founded in June 2022 as a replacement for the folded Extremadura UD, who disappeared due to serious financial problems, which resulted in them being expelled from the Primera División RFEF.[1] [2]
Club Deportivo Extremadura 1924 was founded in 2022 by Spanish businessman Daniel Tafur as the successor of the dissolved Extremadura UD.[3] His first task as the club’s president was to get its predecessor’s place in the Segunda Federación,[4] but they failed and therefore, the club dropped to the Segunda Extremeña, the lowest category of Spanish football for football clubs in Extremadura.
Their debut season began at the seventh level at group 5, with their debut opponent having to be EMD Aceuchal B, gaining a 4-0 win in their first league match in existence.[5] Performances similar to that match continued and, in doing so, they won their Segunda Extremeña group and participated in the promotion play-offs at a chance of promotion to the Primera Extremeña. By beating AD Hispanolusa in the second phase of the play-offs, they achieved an instant promotion.
In January 2024, the club became a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva and changed its name to Club Deportivo Extremadura, by deleting the yar 1924.[6]
In May 2024, Extremadura achieved promotion to Tercera Federación; after finishing first of the group 4, they defeated CP Chinato 3–2 on aggregate in the promotion play-offs.[7]
On 31 August 2024, Extremadura won the Extremenian stage of the Copa Federación after beating 2–1 Castuera in the final. Three months later, on 13 November 2024, Extremadura became champion of the national stage of the Copa Federación, after defeating Compostela in the final.
