The master plan of Baku White City (az|Bakı Ağ Şəhər pronounced as /az/) is a modern city in the Xətai-Khatai district of Azerbaijan conceptualized to be part of the 2021 strategic plan for Baku. It refers to the re-development of a portion of Black City, a 221-hectare land area.[1] [2]
The project was designed by Atkins and Foster and Partners.[3] Around 75 per cent of the project will be residential units, creating a new community of 19,700 households for about 50,000 people as well as commercial and leisure units which will provide up to 48,000 jobs.[4] The project was completed in 2022.[5]
The opening ceremony of Baku White City took place on 24 December 2011. In 2014, the Lycée français de Bakou (Baku French Lyceum) located in White City was inaugurated by President Ilham Aliyev.[6] In 2015, the eastern part of the Baku Boulevard, the city's seaside promenade, was extended by two kilometers to cover the coastal part of White City,[7] which also became the site of the newly built Boulevard Hotel Baku.[8]
In 2015, the Baku White City Office Building became the first property in Azerbaijan to be awarded BREEAM certification on international ecological standards with the rating of Good.[9]
From November 19, 2023, modern and comfortable buses are at the service of passengers on regular route number 4 (Nariman Narimanov - White city residential area).
The Baku White City Metro Station is under construction in this area by Baku Metro.
In February 2012, the government of Azerbaijan announced that it is planning to restore the tram line in Baku. A new line had to be laid along the seaside promenade of Baku Boulevard in central Baku as part of the Baku White City development project. Since then, Formula One made Alstom change the plans and the route of this tram line, which never happened, and project was not implemented yet.
