Bono, also known as Abron, Brong, and Bono Twi, is a major dialect within the Akan dialect continuum that is spoken by the Bono people.[1] [2] Bono is spoken by approximately 1.2 million people in Ghana, primarily in the Bono Region, Bono East Region, and by over 300,000 in eastern Côte d'Ivoire.[3]

Relationship with other dialects of Akan

Bono is mutually intelligible with other dialects of Akan, but the degree of intelligibility depends on the geographical distance between the dialects. Most speakers of Bono are bidialectal in Asante.[4]

Bono and Wasa are the most divergent dialects of Akan. Along with Fante, Bono is also one of the most conservative, retaining features such as the third-person plural pronoun that have since been lost elsewhere.[5] [6]
