Abdul Muntaqim ibni Al-Muhtadee Billah (born 17 March 2007) is the oldest child and elder son of Al-Muhtadee Billah, heir-apparent to the Sultan of Brunei, and his wife, Sarah, Crown Princess of Brunei.[1] The Prince is second-in-line to become Sultan of Brunei after his father, who is heir-apparent to Abdul Muntaqim's grandfather Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei.

Early life and education

Prince Muntaqim was born on 17 March 2007, at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan.[2] In honour of the birth of the prince, a 19-gun salute was fired from the cannons on the grounds of Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei. He is currently studying at International School Brunei (ISB).[3]

Football career

Since the age of five, Abdul Muntaqim has expressed a long-standing interest in the sport of association football.[4] [5] He developed his skills at the club owned by his father, Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Football Club, beginning from 2021.[6] [7] The following year, he captained the Brunei national U-17 football team during the 2022 AFF U-16 Championship in Indonesia.[8] [9]

In 2023, Abdul Muntaqim laced up with DPMM FC for the FABD Youth Under-20 League.[10] His team subsequently became the league champions, although he was unable to participate in the trophy presentation due to an official excursion to Japan.[11] [12]

In July 2024, Abdul Muntaqim was selected for the Brunei national under-19 football team playing at the 2024 ASEAN U-19 Boys Championship.[13]

Abdul Muntaqim registered as a player for the second team of DPMM FC in the 2024–25 Brunei Super League, following the footsteps of his father's cousin Pengiran Muda Abdul Qawi who starred for his own club QAF FC in the late 2000s as a royal footballer playing in the Bruneian top flight.[14] He made his league debut against MS ABDB on 1 September 2024 in a 2–1 win.[15] He scored his first two career goals in a 7–0 win against Wijaya FC on 24 November of that year.[16]

Personal interests

Other sports

Abdul Muntaqim participated in the Pencak Silat Seni Championships in Tutong District, which were conducted in connection with the festivities of His Majesty's 68th birthday.[17]

During the 5th Brunei Open & Masters Swimming Championship at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, he made two new records which were 1:33.05 in 100 m freestyle and 51.12s in 50 m backstroke.[18]

Abdul Muntaqim participated in several basketball tournaments representing ISB including the U-13 Omni 3×3 Challenge,[19] and the U-13 Brunei Youth Cup.[20]

Consequently, losing to Dessen Chung Min Ting in the Brunei Open Badminton Championship 2018, he made as far as into the semi-final.[21]

For the 2019 under-13 Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) Games, Abdul Muntaqim was part of the athletics team sent to represent ISB in Phuket, Thailand.[22]
