On 24 May, Cambridge confirmed their initial pre-season plans, with matches against West Bromwich Albion, Braintree Town, Ebbsfleet United along with a training camp in Portugal.[31] A week later, a fourth friendly was added to the pre-season schedule, versus Colchester United.[32]

Cambridge United were drawn away to Woking in the first round[34] [35] and at home to Wigan Athletic in the second round.[36]

On 27 June, the draw for the first round was made, with Cambridge being drawn at home against Queens Park Rangers.[37]
